Dawn Raids 1970

 Dawn Raids - 1970

On Monday August 2021 the prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, said the time had come to deliver an apology for the dawn raids, when officials would target people believed to have overstayed their visas purely on the basis of their ethnicity.

The dawn raids period is a defining one in New Zealand’s history,Ardern said. To this day Pacific communities face prejudices and stereotypes. An apology can never reduce what happened, or undo the decades of disadvantage experienced as a result, but it can contribute to healing for Pacific peoples.

To accept Jacinda's apology , she was covered by a symbolic request for forgiveness during the apology ceremony.Once you are covered in the tapa cloth you are not allowed to move anywhere , you might even have to go days and months without eating or drinking . Until whoever you're apologizing accepts your apology.
